What is Nature’s Sunshine MLM company?

Nature's Sunshine Products, also called "NSP", is a manufacturer and Multi Level Marketing business. The company is a health and wellness focused MLM and is selling dietary supplements, like herbs, vitamins, minerals, and personal care products. It is based in Lehi in Utah, with a manufacturing facility in Spanish Fork in Utah.

Nature's Sunshine is probably one of the oldest companies in the MLM field. It was founded in 1972, and their marketing is now hardly relying on word of mouth and social media.

Story of Nature’s Sunshine

Nature's Sunshine was founded by the Gene Hughes and Kristine Hughes almost 50 years ago, who first kept capsicum in their own kitchen. They used to adopt a MLM business model to sell their products directly to consumers via independent distributors. Both founders really wanted to focus on health problems and provide people with natural solutions. Their idea was more to deliver the benefits without necessarily to eat the products.

In 2015, Nature’s Sunshine’s generated $324,71 million in global revenue annually, with over 500 products.

As per today, the CEO and chairman are respectively Terrence Moorehead and Gregory L. Probert.

How to earn money with Nature’s Sunshine ?

You can earn money with Nature’s Sunshine through 2 different ways. Like many other MLM business you will be requested to:

  • recruit people
  • sell their products at retail price (in order to earn commissions)

Like most MLM’s their marketing is relying on word of mouth and social media. So, you got it, you have to spread the word!

How much does Nature’s Sunshine membership cost?

To get started with Nature’s Sunshine, the only thing they will ask you is to place an order of minimum $40. No other purchase will be requested from them. This sounds almost cheap, doesn’t it?

You will also be suggested to buy optional programs. These are nothing else but trainings going from $399 to $549:

  • Online Training: certification program online that costs $399.
  • IN.FORM Coach certificate: this will cost you $549 to attend and get the certificate after attending the training.

What is Nature’s Sunshine’s Compensation Plan?

Every Nature’s Sunshine Product (also called NSP),has an assigned point value called “Qualification Volume.” Nature's Sunshine uses these points to calculate monthly bonuses and commissions to which Members are entitled. ... Bonus-earners should remember that compensation from promotional sign-up packages is calculated separately from regular paid-on QV (Qualification Volume).

There are 2 different plans in this MLM business:

  • The Classic Plan: recommended to people willing to become a distributor in part- or full- time, or people willing to manage a health and supplement shop.
  • The Legacy Plan: recommended to people willing to sponsor others as a NSP member and create a network.

Both plans does have major differences.

The first difference lies in the unilevel commissions:

As a NSP distributor, you are placed at the very top of the team and each member you have recruited is placed right under (the first level). There can be a certain number of levels, like in a pyramid, and the percentage of commissions combined with the number of levels the distributor is paid out on, will be determined by the distributor’s rank in the membership.

Distributors can qualify beyond the 5th level at the Global Elite level if they have “100 International Managers” in their downline.

The second difference lies in the distributor membership ranks:

There are 11 distributor membership ranks in both plans (Classic and Legacy). The rank goes from Member - NSP affiliate - (as the lowest) to Global Elite -  (a the highest).

You’ll find right below a link with explanations:

Compensation plan here : https://www.naturessunshine.com/content/us/misc/CompensationPlanOverview.pdf?v=09172015

The third difference lies in the distributor purchase rebates:

NSP offers rebates on the distributors orders for personal use. The rate of these rebates will depend of the quantity of products ordered by the distributor (calculated by QV).

How the nature's sunshine compensation plan is calculated?

For the Classic Plan:

  1. 0-99 QV order  – no rebate
  2. 100-299 QV order = 10%
  3. 300-599 QV order = 12%
  4. 600-999 QV order = 18%
  5. 1000-2999 QV order = 27%
  6. 3000+ QV order = 30%

For the Legacy Plan:

  1. 0-99 QV = 0%
  2. 100-499 QV = 10%
  3. 500-999 QV = 15%
  4. 1000+ QV – 20%

The fourth difference lies in the smart start bonus:

The Smart Start Bonus is available to newly recruit distributor orders that generate at least 100QV.

The Classic Plan distributors can earn “up to 30%” on these first orders, with their direct manager or higher up lines earning a 10% commission. Two additional managers or higher ranked upline levels are paid a 5% bonus.

The Legacy Plan raises the recruiting distributor’s commission to “up to 40%” with the upline commissions being the same as the Classic Plan’s rates.

There are no qualification criteria on how the “up to 30% or 40%” are paid to the recruiting distributor provided in the Nature’s Sunshine compensation plan.

Important to note is that, Smart Start Bonus only applies to US distributors and orders placed by new US distributors.

There are additional bonuses for both plan Classic and Legacy. But once more, these bonuses are paid out according to the membership rank you are in.

Nature 's Sunshine income Disclosure 2018

Regarding Nature's Sunshine income disclosure, there were 37 404 Active distributors in 2018. Only 25% (which represents 9351) of the Active Distributors earned commissions.

It is quite difficult to give an exact number of how much money a distributor can make, as it will all depend of which level the distributor is, and even at this point, it will depend of his/her investment in the business. However, according the information below, we can have an approximate amount of what to expect in average.

Note that it does not represent the total amount of profit (it does not include any retail markup earned by the distributor), nor does it represent your expenses.

Is Nature's Sunshine a scam?

Is Nature’s Sunshine A Scam?

To answer the very first questions of this Nature’s Sunshine review “Is Nature’s Sunshine a scam”, i would clearly say “No it isn’t”. Like another MLM business Young Living, Nature's Sunshine cannot be considered as a pyramid scheme. The company is real, the business is legit and found by real and experienced people.

The company has been around for almost 50 years so if it was illegal, it would have been shut down by now. Products are overall good quality and tested, despite a few negative reviews though.

However, it is clear also that there are also negative points to consider before joining Nature’s Sunshine, like the missing income disclosure statement, which is kinda weird though and the legal issues that the company faced years ago in Brazil.

The company does have a true success story, and it is still growing. Products to sell are numerous, great trainings are provided and you can count on support…

What Are The Pros & Cons of Nature's Sunshine?

What are the pros of the Nature’s Sunshine business?

As some other MLM businesses Nature’s Sunshine does offer great support and tools to develop your own business with the company. You are able to sell the products and you are also taught on how to recruit people thanks to specific marketing techniques like social media techniques.

Another great point is the low cost to start with the business. It is only $40 without other products to buy. This is quite different from other MLM companies that are most of time very expensive. Moreover, there is no inventory required as the company works according an automatic shipping program.

Products are tested according a rigorous quality control process. Even if the products are not FDA approved, they do comply with the standards and regulations set forth for dietary supplements. The products are also clearly labeled and are at affordable prices. The company's product line includes remedies for allergies, cleansing regimens, weight loss products, and a wide variety of nutritional supplements.

Nature’s Sunshine offers free webinars and yearly conferences that provide product education, updates, and business guidance. There is also a free access to the members-only online community.

A quite reassuring point can be the experienced leadership of this company. Both chairman and CEO are highly experienced. Gregory L. Probert was the former President of Herbalife, but he also used to the Vice President of Worldwide Home Entertainment at The Walt Disney Company.

What are the cons of the Nature’s Sunshine business?

Unfortunately, and in order to qualify for rebates and commissions from a downline in the compensation plan, independent distributors need to either purchase or resell $100 in products monthly. If sales are slow, this can really eat into your bottom line. If you are relying on the business opportunity as a regular income, this can be a financial hardship without an extensive network and downline.

Moreover, there is no Income Disclosure Statement made available. This is just a pity that such a company known for decades does not provide this kind of information. Most of the information regarding Nature’s Sunshine’s compensation plan for example can be found on reviews. Kinda hard to find more specific details about the business opportunity and other numbers related to the company. Even if it doesn’t mean something “bad” in some ways, it does clearly show a lack of transparency.

Last but not least, the company faced some legal issues in 2009. The SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) charged Nature’s Sunshine Products with bribing officials in Brazil with over a million dollars to import unregistered nutritional products into the country between 2000 and 2001

The allegations stated that Nature’s Sunshine Products falsified accounting books to hide their illegal payments and the SEC stated that Nature’s Sunshine violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

As a result of this legal issue, sales in Brazil fell dramatically. In an effort to solve this problem, Nature’s Sunshine allegedly doled out undocumented cash and recorded them in their books as “importation advances”. The subsidiary in Brazil documented them as legitimate expenses, and Nature's Sunshine failed to disclose the information in SEC filings.

The company also allegedly violated federal security laws when it filed misleading forms. The company agreed to pay $600,000 in fines in order to settle the case. The upper-level management resigned after the fact, and the incident was regarded as Nature's Sunshine failing to take appropriate remedial action against poor decision-making by executive management. There appear to be no further incidents.

To Conclude:

Conclusion

To the question is Nature’s Sunshine legit, I would say “yes”. You can be part of those who reach great success with the Nature’s Sunshine program, but remember that chances remain thin.

To be honest, I do have a business opportunity to recommend. It is called Affiliate Marketing.
